How do I know if I need an Oil Change?

Most modern cars are equipped with an oil life monitoring system that uses an algorithm to determine when you need to change your oil. Oil life is dependent on several factors: driving habits, engine conditions, and the current climate. Your oil life monitoring system takes these factors and gives you an estimate, typically a percentage, of your oil life. These systems are fairly accurate as they have been gathering data and improving them over the past couple of decades.

If you car does not have a monitoring system, there are a couple of other ways to check if you need an oil change. The car manufacturer gives recommendations for oil changes at certain mileage intervals. Check your vehicle’s manual to know what your manufacturer recommends. You can also check the recommendation from your service technician, a sticker displaying the mileage/date of the next recommended is typically placed on the windshield after your last oil change.

Types of Oil

Conventional

Motor oil is an integral lubricant for your car which helps absorb heat and reduce friction as your engine’s components rub against each other. Driving far past a needed oil change could cause more expensive problems with your engine as sludge and debris build up.

Synthetic

Lots of stuff about fake oil here. This is the modern, factory made chemcial, not the all-nautral, spring oil that has been primarily used in years past.

Why do I need to change my oil?

Motor oil is an integral lubricant for your car which helps absorb heat and reduce friction as your engine’s components rub against each other. Driving far past a needed oil change could cause more expensive problems with your engine as sludge and debris build up. The oil will degrade over time from the constant exposure to heat, moisture, and air. The oil filter helps catch some of the debris the oil has picked up while doing it’s cycle, but eventually it will become too much sludge to propery perform it’s duties. One could think about it like a blood clot; clogged up pipes is not good for anyone.
